I am trying to install report portal on a windows xp machine. My reporting server is Microsoft sql 2008. I can connect to the sql box using odbc with the correct sa username and password and I have double checked it however on install of report portal it is saying that the sa user login has failed

any help greatly appreciated!

Please try this: On “SQL Server Analysis Services Selection” page select: Not Used / Already Configured.

If your installation is successful you can setup XMLA connection manually by creating XMLA virtual directory as described this document: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc917711.aspx

You can register the connection in ReportPortal. Go to Admin > Connections. Select XMLA URL for connection type and xmla/msmdpump.dll for connection string. Click Add to add the connection.
