OpenAI has released a test environment for the ChatGPT API. Here you can test specifying input and user messages and compare the output of both 3.5-turbo and 3.5-turbo-0301.
Until now, ChatGPT was only available through the AI company’s web interface, even in the Pro version for $20 per month.
“All of these unofficial tools that were just toys, essentially, that would live in your own personal sandbox and were cool can now actually go out to tons of users,” he says.
OpenAI’s announcement could be the start of a new AI goldrush. What was previously a cottage industry of hobbyists operating in a licensing gray area can now turn their tinkering into fully-fledged businesses.
The cost. The ChatGPT API costs $0.002 per 1,000 tokens, which are the sequences of messages with metadata that the model consumes. The Whisper large-V2 model is priced at $0.006 per minute. This is a huge reduction given that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman once estimated computing costs at a few cents for each chat.
OpenAI offers other ChatGPT models besides the stable gpt-3.5-turbo, today gpt-3.5-turbo-0301 is released, and a new stable release should follow in April. All requests are handled by Microsoft’s Azure cloud, developers can also book dedicated instances, as already leaked. According to OpenAI, this starts making economic sense past 450 million tokens per day.
